Your mother was right, and the Canadian Cancer Society now agrees: you should eat more veggies. The society says that eating at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day could prevent thousands of future cancer cases.

"The Canadian Cancer Society estimates that 20% of cancers could be prevented if every Canadian ate at least 5 servings of vegetables and fruit daily," said Alison Davis, a director at the Society. "However, research shows that only 30% of Canadians are currently eating 5 or more servings a day, and only 7% are aware that eating vegetables and fruit may reduce their risk of cancer."

To increase awareness the Cancer Society is joining with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Produce Marketing Association to produce the "5 to 10 a day . . . Are you getting enough?" campaign, which the groups hope will inform Canadians that they can reduce blood pressure and lower the incidence of cancer and heart disease by living a more healthy lifestyle. The campaign is aimed primarily at women aged 24 to 45 because it is this group that does most of the grocery shopping for families.

"The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada has been promoting the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and healthy eating for years and with this project we hope to reach even more Canadians with the message that what you eat has a direct impact on your health," said Doug MacQuarrie, director of health promotion at the foundation.
