Unwrapping the gift of life
Date: Dec. 2, 1999 OTTAWA -- Canadian Blood Services (CBS) has launched a nationwide campaign to collect 50 000 units of blood in the first 22 days of December. "The holiday season is traditionally a time when Canadians show their generosity," says Lynda Cranston, the CEO of Canadian Blood Services, "What better way to celebrate the holiday season than to give the gift of life." Cranston says the need for blood can be particularly acute during December as increased holiday travel on icy roads - and related accidents - combine with traumas associated with winter activities to keep the demand for blood high. Unfortunately, the busy holiday season often means that blood donations is at the bottom of people's agendas. "This campaign is a reminder to make donating blood part of your plans this holiday season," says Cranston. Those interested in participating in the CBS blood drive should contact their local blood centre for clinics and times. Information is also available by calling 888 462-4056. CBS will provide weekly campaign updates on the CBS Web site CBS manages the collection and distribution of blood and blood products throughout Canada with the exception of Quebec, where Héma-Québec has that responsibility. The CBS operates 14 blood centres, 2 plasma collection centres and countless blood donor clinics.
