About us Statement of purpose The Journal of Gambling Issues offers an Internet-based forum for developments in gambling-related research, policy and treatment as well as personal accounts about gambling and gambling behaviour. Through publishing peer-reviewed articles about gambling as a social phenomenon and the prevention and treatment of gambling problems, it is our aim to help make sense of how gambling affects us all. It is published by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and is fully funded by the Ontario Substance Abuse Bureau of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. We welcome manuscripts submitted by researchers and clinicians, people involved in gambling as players, and family and friends of gamblers. Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this journal do not necessarily reflect those of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
The Editorial board of the Journal of Gambling Issues (JGI) has voted to accept the following three statements in order to define and make clear our journal’s role in the community of gambling scholars and to affirm that we accept and support current standards of scholarly excellence, autonomy, independence, and the integrity expected of peer-reviewed science journals: a) Peer review and acceptance process. We confirm that all papers accepted for peer review will be reviewed by at least two reviewers and that the acceptance or rejection for publication of peer-reviewed papers rests on assessments of quality of research and analysis and originality as made by the peer reviewers and the editor. Non-peer-reviewed editorials, opinion papers, and letters (and similar texts) are discussed and voted on by the JGI Editorial board. Media reviews (books, films, DVDs, Web sites, information and educational sources) are normally evaluated and accepted or rejected by the editor. In the case of contentious content, the JGI Editorial board may help the editor decide whether to accept or reject a media review. b) Decision to accept or reject a paper for publication. We confirm that the editor and the JGI Editorial board are the sole arbiters of whether a paper is accepted or rejected, and in editing the paper’s contents. The editor and the JGI Editorial board accept responsibility for refusing to allow other parties to influence the publication of (1) papers that were either approved by reviewers and the editor and/or the Editorial board, and (2) non-peer-reviewed papers (including editorials, opinion papers, reviews of books and other media, letters to the editor, and other papers). The author accepts or edits a final version on a time-limited approval basis. c) Authorship credit. We accept the spirit, the principles, and the following criteria for authorship credit from the “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication” (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, 2007). This protocol requires that to qualify for authorship each person listed as an author of a paper must qualify for receiving authorship credit by fulfilling all three of these conditions: (1) by making substantial contributions to the research design, or data acquisition, or analysis and interpretation of data; (2) by either drafting the article, or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and (3) by final approval of the version to be published and by taking joint responsibility for the paper. Authorship shall not be granted for collecting data, for preliminary analysis, for offering or securing funding or other resources (including workspace, hardware, software), nor for textual editing, correction, or proof reading. The JGI concurs with the authorship guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors: Acquisition of funding, collection of data, or general supervision of the research group, alone, does not justify authorship. All persons designated as authors should qualify for authorship, and all those who qualify should be listed. Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for appropriate portions of the content. (ICMJE, 2007) Voted on and accepted: February 12, 2008
