Over 50 notifiable diseases are under national surveillance through coordination with federal, provincial and territorial governments. Case definitions are available in the Case Definitions for Diseases Under National Surveillance.
Of special interest is The Canadian Communicable Disease Report of October 2006 which includes the final report and recommendations from the National Notifiable Diseases Working Group with regard to the diseases that will be included in the update of nationally notifiable diseases.
The Notifiable Diseases On-line database includes data from 1989 up to 2004 for each province and territory. You can generate maps and charts of reported cases and rates of infection.
Notifiable diseases are distinguished from other infectious diseases by the requirement to report the instance of the disease, either nationally or internationally.
The Infectious Diseases page of the Public Health Agency of Canada Web site provides bulletins and fact sheets. The Infectious Diseases News Brief is a weekly digest of national and international information about communicable disease incidents and issues.
